Sailing Away

Sailing Away

On a blustery cold morning in February 2009, we sailed down the Kennebec River on the nation’s newest Arleigh Burke destroyer, USS STOCKDALE. The ship was named after Vietnam prisoner of war, and Medal of Honor recipient, Vice Admiral James Bond Stockdale. We were leaving Bath, Maine towards our new homeport in my birthplace, San Diego, CA. I was moving back after 25 years away.

That morning I waved goodbye to my wife and kids on the shore outside Fort Popham in Phippsburg, Maine. We made port visits in Norfolk, VA, Mayport, FL, ColΓ³n & Panama City, Panama, and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Here is the morning we left. Fair winds and following seas.
