Harpswell

I moved back to Maine in Winter 2013. I immediately set out to photograph the people and places of Maine. Just 30 minutes south of me are several long narrow islands connected by bridges and jut out into Casco Bay. The Harpswell islands have a long and storied history as a vacation destination during the summer months. During the winters, however, many of the businesses, including motels and shops, close down for the season. The area's main industry, lobstering, continues on in the bitter cold. The brave lobstermen and women have witnessed these scenes many a morning as they prepare to get underway. I can't say if these sunrises become commonplace for them or if they still watch in awe as their boat motors out to sea.

While You Are Away is a project that is a play on words from the local vernacular. If you are not born in Maine, you are "From Away". Since most visitors visit Maine when the weather is quite literally perfect, they all converge on the picturesque shores and change the scenery. Many of them do wake up before the sun rises and witness colorful scenes that are chased away by the sun with only a promise of its return the next morning. So unless you are here during the bitterly cold winters, you miss Maine in its true peaceful state. I add new images each winter.

Each image seen here is available in four distinct presentations.
